Auxier Ridge, Double Arch & Courthouse Rock Trail, Red River Gorge, Kentucky

Fourth of July 2020, with cabin fever in full effect we took advantage of the long weekend and headed to the Red River Gorge. Located in east-central Kentucky just two hours from Cincinnati, the Red River Gorge is known as the jewel of the Southeast. A geological wonderland it has been designated a National Natural Landmark, a National Archaeological District, as well as being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With rock formations ranging from rugged cliffs to natural bridges to the largest collection of sandstone arches east of the Rockies, we were pleasantly surprised at all the natural beauty the Red River Gorge has to offer. Day 1 we combine the Auxier Ridge Trail and Courthouse Rock Trail to make one long loop with a side jaunt to Double Arch. Located at the end of Tunnel Ridge Road the trailhead is located on the Northeast side of the parking lot. The Auxier Ridge Trail follows a high narrow ridge for about 2 miles. As we hike along this ridge we are in awe of the incredible views of Double Arch, Haystack Rock, as well as, Courthouse Rock. As we approach the end of Auxier Ridge we come to base of Courthouse Rock, from here we descend a steep staircase making our way towards Auxier Branch Trail.

The Auxier Branch Trail is a .80 mile side trail connecting Auxier Ridge Trail and Courthouse Rock Trail to Double Arch Trail. After crossing Auxier Branch creek the trail begins to climb towards the Double Arch Trail. At the junction of Double Arch Trail we turn right heading north towards Double Arch. The next .70 miles the trail gradually circles the ridge and ascends to a wooden staircase, leading up to Double Arch. From here we have a spectacular view of Auxier Ridge, Courthouse Rock and Haystack Rock. After a short break and some photo ops we retrace our steps back to the Courthouse Rock Trail junction. The Courthouse Rock Trail heads south into the dense forest just below Auxier Ridge. This trail is a lot less traveled than the other two and we enjoy the solitude. After following Courthouse Rock Trail for just under two miles the trail becomes steep as it climbs back up to Auxier Ridge. By the end of the day we have hiked just under 8 miles and are ready to relax before another day of exploring.
