Spearfish Canyon has been one of my favorite places since I was a little girl. As kids we spent countless hours exploring the streams and trails that run through this magnificent canyon. Spearfish Falls is one of the canyons hidden gems. This 47 foot waterfall was actually ‘turned off’ for 86 years as the water in Little Spearfish Creek was diverted to a nearby hydroelectric plant that helped power the Homestake Gold Mine. In 2003, after the mine closed, the diversion pipes were decommissioned and the waterfall returned to it former glory. The trail to Spearfish Falls is an easy out and back that can be enjoyed by almost everyone.

The last time I was back home my twin sister, who has cerebral palsy, wanted to do a hike with me. A few years ago we hiked White Rocks together so I knew that this 3/4 miles hike would be an easy one for her. It’s worth noting that while this trail is mostly flat it is unfortunately not wheel chair accessible.

The trail begins on the North side of the Latchstring restaurant and descends 60 feet down to the canyon floor. Once on the canyon floor the trail flattens out and remains flat all the way to the falls. The views of the canyon and the waterfall on this trail are incredible and well worth the short hike.
